TWISTED LIMB PAPERWORKS -- Etiquette Guidelines
Twisted Limb Paperworks, LLC

Everybody knows the tradtional, old-fashioned way to address an envelope, i.e. Mr. and Mrs. Man's Name Smith. To the right, we have compiled from research and customer preferences, new guidelines that show acknowledgement and respect to all of your guests.

If you like the new etiquette, but think that your family won't, remember that you can address envelopes differently for each guest on your list-- friends and colleagues according to contemporary guidelines and the older generation of your family, according to tradition (or vice versa dending on your family, friends, and colleagues.) This makes everyone happy! Each person gets only one invitation, and will not know how you've addressed the others.

The decision whether to address the invitations casually and without titles or more formally can also be made based on your personal style and the character of the wedding. (Is it outside at your favorite state park campground or is it an elegant sit down dinner at a hotel ballroom or art museum?)

Contemporary and Inclusive Etiquette Guidelines for Addressing your Invitation Envelopes

Because of our environmental mission of reducing paper use and conserving trees, we do not offer inside envelopes. These guidelines are to help you address the one invitation envelope. Both informal and formal suggestions are given:

SINGLE PEOPLE:
Unmarried Woman Shannon Harper and Guest/Ms. Shannon Harper and Guest *Of course, if your guest has a partner, please use his or her name on the envelope. "and Guest" is only for your guests who don't have mates, and you don't know who they might show up with!
Unmarried/Divorced Man Perry Woods and Guest/Mr.Perry Woods and Guest*
Divorced Woman Jesse Martinez and Guest/Ms. Jesse Martinez and Guest*
Widowed Woman Martha Brooks and Guest (if enough time has passed)/Mrs. Martha Brooks (and Guest)

MARRIED COUPLES:
Married, same last name Michael and Jane Harper/Mr. Michael and Mrs. Jane Harper
*Keep in mind that depending upon envelope size and name lengths, including both the husband and wife's name on one line MIGHT mean giving up the titles.
Married, different last name Jane Wilson and Michael Harper/Ms.(or Mrs.) Jane Wilson and Mr. Michael Harper
Married, woman has hypenated name Jane Wilson-Harper and Michael Harper/Ms.(or Mrs.) Jane Wilson-Harper and Mr. Michael Harper
Married, both are doctors Mary and Mark Connelly/The Doctors Connelly/Doctor Mary Connelly and Doctor Mark Connelly
Married, she's a doctor, he's not Mary and Mark Connelly/Dr. Mary Davis and Mr. Mark Davis

MAN & WOMAN LIVING TOGETHER:

Mr. Michael Harper

CHILDREN:
Multiple Children Michael and Jane Harper
Kerry, Todd, and Julie

Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Jane Harper
Kerry, Todd, and Julie Harper

(It's not acceptable to use "and Family" if children are invited. List all of their names on the second line, underneath parents' names, from oldest to youngest, with or without the last name--sometimes this is decided by the amount of room on the envelope!)

Another practical reason for not using the phrase "and Family" is that it is not clear exactly who is invited. Many customers with larger extended families report that having an open invitation to "and Family" could mean that a live-in parents, cousins, etc. might come along for the ride.
